What is a CT scan of the chest?
CT scans of the chest are scheduled for evaluation of the lung tissue and the mediastinum, the central structure containing the major arteries, veins, heart and esophagus as well as lymph node chains.
Is it painful?
No. There commonly is no pain. Contrast material, if utilized, may produce a brief sensation of warmth, flushing or a metallic taste in your mouth.
How long will the exam take?
The exam will take between 15 and 45 minutes from the time you lie on the CT table.
When may I eat?
As soon as the exam is over.
How will I learn the results?
Your physician will discuss the results with you.
Special note:
If you have asthma, any known allergy to food or medications, or are pregnant, please inform the technologist before your exam. If you are diabetic and receive Glucophage (Metformin), Avandamet, Actoplus Met, Janumet, PrandiMet, Glipizide and Metformin, inform the technologist before beginning the examination.
Special preparation and precautions are required with these medications.
Preparation:
You may eat light or liquid meal prior to the exam. You may drink clear liquids during this time. Routine medications may also be taken.
