What is an obstetrical fetal ultrasound?
An obstetrical ultrasound exam looks at the uterus and ovaries and at the fetus.  The fetus is checked to be sure that it’s size is appropriate for it’s expected “age”.  The fetus is also checked to be sure the fetal anatomy is structurally normal.

What will happen in the X-ray room?
During the exam the patient lies on a table with the lower abdomen/pelvic area exposed.  The sonographer will put a warm gel on the skin surface.  A transducer will be moved over the skin surface by the sonographer.

How long will it take?
About 35 minutes, or longer for exams later in the pregnancy.

Will it be painful?
No.

What preparation is required?

  • You may eat regular meals prior to an obstetrical ultrasound exam.

  • If you are less than 14 weeks pregnant, you should have a full bladder.  Please begin drinking 32 oz (1 quart) of water one hour before the exam is scheduled to begin, and do not urinate until the examination is over.

  • If you are more than 14 weeks pregnant, there is no preparation needed.

  • If you are scheduled for a biophysical profile, please eat a meal or snack one hour before the exam.

How will I learn the results?
You may call your doctor to discuss the results, which are usually available within 48 hours
